Quick look at the month gone by: The iPhone Effect

Thanks to my move to London, I have been lagging behind my blog posts for last few months. But luckily I had collected/archived bunch of posts over this period and will slowly start publishing them. Sorry for the "delayed news"!!!

Some of the interesting reads from around the Web for June 2011

The iPhone Effect: It's just been 4 years! Seems like ages ago. If Steve Jobs is not the Edison of our times, I really don't know who else would qualify. He's changed the face technology so many times in the last 3-4 decades. Hats off to you Sir!!!

WooHoo!!! Back to the Future baby!

If this is what Nokia has in it's pipeline, it's game on! It's good to see them back with a great phone for an old Nokia faithful. Am for now hooked on Android but am still hopeful that Nokia would be working with Android some time in the future!

Super cool. For all the iron-man and comic geeks!!!

I generally don't agree with the premise of this article that everyone successful, who's born privileged, should be modest and acknowledge the fact they were "born privileged"! But the author ties the article well in the end to give it a balanced tone!

----------------------

"For in his April 13 speech at George Washington University, the speech to which Standard & Poor's responded by reducing the government's credit rating to negative" - First, S&P didn't reduce the government's credit rating but marked outlook of US economy as negative. And second, I don't think S&P took its "action" as a reaction to Obama's speech! I just don't understand why Pundits have to be Pundits & feel the need to take partisan shots at the opponents. Why can't we just sit down and discuss policies in a proper civil debate ? Starting and ending your article by saying Obama dozed off in Tax 1 and he likes to take people's money, doesn't seem like a debate to me anymore!!!

----------------------

Army Strong!

----------------------

I thought we've seen everything in 2008 election season but Republicans (read Beck, trump, Bachman et al) are bent on topping it with 2012 nomination! Obama might get an easier walk to 2nd term than he deserves!

Donald Trump: White House Correspondents' Dinner 'Inappropriate'

Osama Bin Laden is DEAD!

The killing of the mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks in New York came as a relief, jubilation and sense of uneasiness across the globe. Here are some headlines from around the world few days after the raid by SEAL team in Pakistan.

----------------------

Osama Bin Laden is DEAD

LOL!!! And this is not the first time. But to be fair other news network also made this mistake. Namely, NDTV!!!

The Killing Next Door: I do agree with the sentiment that it's a vindication of India's stand for last 3 decades! But it doesn't make the situation any less dire, if not worse. Because we now have unstable state with deep links to terrorism/extremists headed by a humiliated and hurt India-centric military / intelligence apparatus with a finger on nuclear button!

I'm surprised it took this long. I think the Bush Shoe game came out the very same day!

Hahaha .. Brings levity to the Situation Room! I think Obama playing PS3 is the most natural edit.

Would you rather have Obama had died rather than Bin Laden ?

The Crazy Donald Trump Presidential Bid

It became so crazy and surreal that it needed it's own blog post!

Searching for Something Good to Say About India

Wow .. This dude is frustrated! I though his first article was a one-off but he continues from where he left with his second letter to NY times!

To be honest, I do agree with some of his premise about out-of-touch NRI patriotism, inequalities amongst Indian masses and paralytic corruption at every level. And I totally agree with him about the insane blind following all the spiritual gurus have in India amongst the "educated".

But I don’t agree with his idea and implication that such extremes are unique to India and therefore the recent peaks of achievement aren't reasons for celebration.

For instance, Commonwealth Games were plagued with huge corruption and Kalamdi was correctly persecuted. (That's a different matter that he's living it up on a government holiday in Tihar Jail and is planning Tihar Olympics!!!!) But Kalmadi should be persecuted because corruption is bad and not because the Chinese Olympics were "better organized".

I think we have a very unkind obsession about making one-to-one comparison between events happening in India and "seemingly similar" world events without caring to know the full story and factoring in different ground realities. I mean South African FIFA World Cup 2010 was a great success because you weren't one the local shopkeepers who were not allowed to sell anything within 1.5KM radius of the stadiums. China is booming and has a great story because you aren't the millions who live in remote villages in awful conditions or political activist who mysteriously disappear!

So yeah if you are feeling cynical or just don’t have anything else to do, go ahead read these articles. Whether you agree with him or not, his articles do make an interesting read.

Remembering 9/11/2001

I was sitting outside my college dorm with my friends on a pleasant Manipal evening as events of 9/11 unfolded 8312 miles away. Enjoying our milkshakes and ready to celebrate my birthday later in the evening, I was totally unaware how these events and the city were to become an integral part of my life!

Losing My Religion

Steven Gerrard

Update: Yet another one bites the dust. STEVIE GERRARD to leave Liverpool! End of an era!

Update: That below sentiments were as of September 2011. And now on March 9th 2012, it's official. I have indeed lost my religion (and my childhood). Rahul Dravid and Peyton Manning have retired this week. It's time to get all nostalgic and re-live all the memories. Here are some of the finest moments:

Nadal cramps up during press conference; Schumacher and Federer are made to look second best; Gerard is perpetually recovering from hamstring injury; Manning may miss the entire 2011-12 season; Hamilton crashes his car every other race; Entire Indian team minus Dravid has returned home injured! Rough Sports Season ? May be. Or may be I am just getting old and losing my religion along with an entire sports generation!
